Does Grok watermark text? No.
By Claude Watermark Research · Updated
No. Grok does not put a watermark in text it writes. xAI declined to sign the industry code of practice that Anthropic and others signed, and has made no commitment to mark Grok's text output. Grok watermarks images and video — that part is real, and xAI's acceptable use policy forbids stripping it — but text is untouched. So every product selling a "Grok watermark remover" is charging you to remove something that was never there. What can be in your Grok text is the same thing any chat interface leaves behind when you copy out of it: HTML, invisible characters, and typography. That is real, it is checkable in seconds, and you can see it free.

The short version
Grok text: no watermark. xAI has not implemented one and has not promised one.
Grok images and video: yes, watermarked. Visible, no setting to turn it off, and removing it breaks xAI's acceptable use policy. Do not.
Claude text: yes, watermarked since 2 August 2026, and Gemini has used SynthID for longer. Grok is the outlier here, not the norm.
Why the removers exist anyway
Because "Grok watermark remover" is a phrase people type, and a search box will always be monetised faster than it is answered. The tools ranking for it either quietly redirect you to a generic AI humaniser, or they describe a Grok watermark in confident technical language — invisible Unicode, statistical token bias, metadata in HTML attributes — none of which xAI has ever said it does.
It is the same playbook the Claude watermark cycle produced within days, and we wrote the teardown of that one. A tool that claims to remove a mark nobody has implemented is either guessing or counting on you not checking.
The tell is easy: ask what it detected before it removed anything. A real check reports counts and positions. A removal with nothing detected is a receipt for work that did not happen.
What actually ends up in text you copy out of Grok
Chat interfaces are web apps, and copying from a web app copies markup. That is where the real, provable stuff lives, and it has nothing to do with watermarking: HTML class and `data-` attributes carried into whatever you paste into, zero-width and exotic Unicode characters, non-breaking spaces, and smart quotes and em dashes.
This is exactly what got people flagged in the Claude cycle — the AO3 detector everyone panicked about was a single CSS rule matching a pasted class name, not a watermark. Pasting into a plain-text editor first prevents all of it.
We have not published measurements of Grok's specific output yet, and we are not going to guess at them. What our checker reports is whatever is genuinely in the text you paste, whichever model wrote it — because it reads bytes rather than trying to infer a model.
Check your Grok text in one paste
Paste it at the top of this page. You get every artifact in it with a count and a position, in your browser, with no account and nothing uploaded. Free, unlimited, and it works the same on Grok output as on Claude or ChatGPT.
If something is there, one click strips it. If nothing is there, you will know that in a second and can stop worrying about it — which is worth more than any tool promising to remove a watermark that does not exist.
Questions
- Does Grok watermark its text output?
- No. xAI has not implemented text watermarking and did not sign the industry code of practice that Anthropic signed. Grok's images and video are watermarked; its text is not.
- Do I need a Grok watermark remover?
- No, because there is no text watermark to remove. If you are worried about what is in text you copied out of Grok, check it for copy-paste artifacts instead — HTML class names, invisible characters and typography. That is the part that is real and it is free to check.
- Can I remove the watermark from a Grok image?
- You should not. Grok watermarks images and video, there is no setting to disable it, and xAI's acceptable use policy prohibits removing or obscuring it. This site deals with text and does not touch images.
- Will Grok add a text watermark later?
- Possibly. xAI still has to meet the EU AI Act's transparency obligations, which took effect on 2 August 2026, so it could be required to mark AI-generated content eventually. Nothing has been announced. We keep a live model-by-model table and will update it if that changes.
- Which chatbots do watermark their text?
- Claude, for models launched on or after 2 August 2026, and Gemini via SynthID. OpenAI has the technology but has not deployed it publicly in ChatGPT. Grok has not either.
